Reading Brazil: The writing of the disagreement

The author of O filho eterno, the most acclaimed Brazilian book of recent years, Cristovão Tezza will read excerpts of his more recent book, Um erro emocional. Teixeira Coelho, will present parts of História Natural da Ditadura – a work in which the catastrophic experiences of the 20th century, in Europe and Latin America, are expressed in a hybrid genre, mixing essay, memoir and fiction.
A different kind of censorship: journalists and authors in Mexico

Currently, few other countries are as dangerous for journalists and authors as Mexico. The drugs mafia is responsible for intimidating and murdering critical reporters, and is forcing many into exile. The author Ana Lilia Pérez, who had to leave her country following death threats against her, joins Urs Jaeggi, journalist Jeanette Erazo Heufelder and Tobias Voss to discuss possible ways of supporting the fight for freedom of expression.

Weltempfänger has set itself the tasks of making hitherto unfamiliar voices heard in Germany, and of charting a route through each year’s profusion of new releases. The alternative best books list, selected by a jury of nine literary professionals, takes into consideration all those works that are not home-grown or well known. Panellists include the writers Carl Nixon and Luiz Ruffato.
