Translation Funding Opportunities

Translation Funding for Non-Fiction Titles

Abstand
The Humanities and Social Sciences have a long tradition in Germany that continues to flourish. The programme Geisteswissenschaften International promotes and extends this tradition by making research available to a global audience. This translation programme, a partnership between the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, the German Federal Foreign Office, the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung and VG Wort, aims to help English-language publishers to make the wider world aware of research that is ‘Made in Germany’.

The partners in this initiative contribute €600,000 every year to fund the translation of outstanding academic works into English. Titles are selected by an independent jury of academics, trade journalists and academic publishers. More than thirty works have already been funded since the launch of the initiative, including titles by Hans Belting, Christian Meier and Niklas Luhmann. The areas of interest of English-language publishers are as diverse as Geisteswissenschaften International’s funding opportunities. Nevertheless, certain focus areas have emerged since the programme’s launch. One of the key points of interest has been the subject of colonialism. With its defeat in the First World War, Germany withdrew from the circle of European colonial powers. But research on imperialism and colonialism was set in motion worldwide by the so-called ‘cultural turn’, just as it was by colonial and postcolonial studies. German research contributes to this body of research and provides important impulses and insights that merit an international readership.
